CHESSmates
Vishal G. Shelat, FRCS, FEBS, FAMS
Associate Professor of SurgeryHow they incorporate what they learned in the CHESS Surgical Ethics Fellowship into their daily role
“The CHESS fellowship has provided me with skills essential for critical analysis of clinical practical ethics consultations. It has provided a forum for me to speak and participate in a safe learning environment that has enabled me to refine my articulation of ideas and thoughts – I can present my perspectives a little bit more clearly (though this is still a work in progress). I participate in my hospital’s institutional clinical ethics committee and Singapore’s national transplant ethics committee. The lessons learned throughout the CHESS fellowship have aided in widening my perspectives on diverse bioethical matters.”
How the CHESS fellowship will be helpful in the future
“The CHESS fellowship has presented me with opportunities to exchange views and ideas with like-minded surgical colleagues. Additionally, it has provided a platform for me to participate and contribute to scholarly work. The fellowship has also provided a unique opportunity to be familiar with diverse perspectives compared to local Singapore perspectives which are largely shaped by colonialism.”
